From Paper to Canvas
Photography captures a moment in time and space. In this show I have chosen to show prints that are printed in the conventional way on gelatin silver paper. Representing my own point of view, I try to reach out to the viewer and invite them into my space, seeing things through my eyes. Devoid of color, the black and white prints allow one to see the world in a different way. I have also chosen to show images that are printed on canvas. They are made by painting the canvas surface with a liquid emulsion and exposing through conventional darkroom methods. These images ask the viewer to see something with their own mind. While they are images taken with traditional black and white film, the nature of the materials produces exciting results. These images are both vague and eerie, leaving the viewer to think ad fill in the gaps with their own interpretation.
About the Artist…
I was born and raised in a small town in rural Kansas. I spent most of my adult life living in the Pacific Northwest, before settling down in Cleveland, Ohio.
I picked up my first camera at the age of eight, although I really didn’t understand how to make it work properly. At 10, I got the first camera of my very own- a Kodak Instamatic- and a love affair was born. Over the years I have progressed through many types of point-and-shoot cameras, with which I took many a snapshot and candid photo. It wasn’t until after my partner gave me a Pentax that I realized I could really create art.
My true passion is working in black and white. Through this medium, I enjoy exploring the world. By stripping it down to its bare essentials, the art of everyday life that surrounds us can be seen without the commotion of color. Black and white film allows us to see things with a different eye, changing the mundane into interesting. I work in the old fashioned way, with film, paper and chemicals in my darkroom. Working with my hands enables me to put a little bit of myself into every work that I develop. Also, with variations in temperature, chemicals, exposure and time two pieces rarely are exactly the same making each piece more unique and exciting.
I also enjoy working in color. This medium allows me to bring a vibrancy and electricity to my work that cannot be achieved in black and white.
