ARTIST BIO I became serious about photography when I decided I needed a practical supplement to my film major. Photography enhanced my approach to film quite a bit and vice versa; you’ll notice a lot of filmic influences throughout my work. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Film and Photography from Elon University, I returned home to Ohio and pursued filmmaking by working as part of a crew and individually on a number of independent productions and national commercials. During that time I exhibited my photography in galleries and local establishments, created a website, and entered a number of juried shows and publications with equal success. The past several months have really been about the creation of new work in addition to expanding and improving my artistic skills and voice. This fall I will be attending the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia and will be earning my Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography.

The Deeper Meaning
1. I am very interested in presenting a new outlook to my audience. Because cameras are so easily acquired, I believe that many people have already decided that photography is nothing more than a mechanical object used as a means of documentation. I don’t feel a lot of times that it is truly accepted as an art form. This may seem like something all artists think; that their work is misunderstood. But my fears were confirmed just the other day when an inquisitive receptionist at the dentist’s office asked me about my work. After a detailed description, she cocked her head to one side and with a rather blank expression replied ‘well, how is that art?’, and then proceeded to tell me about a painting of sunflowers that she means to add to her collection.
2. I think that society as a whole is too quick; we don’t have time to ‘stop and smell the roses’ let alone realize what’s happening to life as we knew it. There’s just too much to do so we rely on convenience and accessibility. We are quick to assess and summarize because, frankly, that’s all we have time for and well, that’s often good enough.
These statements create the duality in my current work. My pieces are not often considered documentation in the traditional sense; most, if not all images, have been manipulated in some way either on the surface, with the camera, or in the darkroom. Through my process I am exemplifying that photography too, can indeed be painterly and idyllic. The second purpose of my work is to extend to my audience an invitation to slow down, step back, and look around your world. Look at the madness, look at the beauty, look at the horror. Experience a new reality, don’t go through your motions. Sit. Be still. See what’s happening around you. It doesn’t matter what you take away from it, you will realize something about yourself. I would like my work to create an emotion in you, whether it’s anger, happiness, hope, or the fear that you left the oven on. Just experience.
Enjoy.
